On our 20th Anniversary
March 28, 2009
Dear Friends,
Twenty years have passed so quickly since the first Athens Master
Chorale Concert on April 16, 1989. Since then, we have performed music by
Dufay, Palestrina, Byrd, Carissimi, Hammerschmidt, Bach, Handel, Haydn,
Mozart, Billings, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Bloch, Thompson,
Bernstein, Hanson, Poulenc, Rutter, Lauridsen, Athens composers Roger Vogel
and Kevin Kelly, and many others. We have participated in performances of
four operas and have traveled to Carnegie Hall in New York and the Biltmore
House in Asheville.
Our music has ranged from large choral/orchestral works to small sacred
and secular unaccompanied pieces. Each of these concerts has been special in
its own way. The music has enriched our lives. Athens Master Chorale
members have been dedicated for twenty years to high quality music
performance and also to each other in regular Monday night rehearsals. The
human voice was the first instrument, and choral music through history has
brought performers and listeners together in a wonderful common experience.
For this twentieth anniversary concert we have chosen to feature our
long time friend, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, by performing his Gloria, Ave
Verum, and Requiem, with orchestra. Our soloists are Melanie Rowell,
soprano, Laurie Swann, alto, Dallas Bono, tenor, and Brandon Graham, bass.
The concert is Friday, May 1, 2009, in Hodgson Hall at the UGA Performing
Arts Center, 8:00 pm.
We appreciate your attendance and support during these past twenty
years and look forward to sharing great music with you again on May 1.
Sincerely,
Joseph Napoli
